The Relaunch of Erskine Industrial UPS

For over 80 years, Dale Power Solutions has led the way in supplying and servicing critical power solutions to major UK markets - healthcare, defence, utilities, telecommunications, data centres, renewable energy, facility management, and more.

A Legacy of Reliability and Innovation

Dale is renowned for its extensive range of Generators, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, and UK-wide service engineers, and has continuously evolved to meet the demands of diverse markets.

To continue its strategy for growth and expand its portfolio, Dale is proud to announce the relaunch of Erskine, bringing back the name under the Dale Power Solutions brand umbrella.

An Insight into the History of Erskine

Erskine Systems Ltd. was founded in 1938 by John Ellis as Erskine Laboratories in Weybridge, Surrey, before relocating to Scalby and later Newby, near Scarborough. Initially, the company marketed high-quality radio receivers. During World War II, it engaged heavily in work for the Ministry of Defence, establishing a long-term reputation for quality and reliability. Post-war, Erskine specialised in manufacturing oscilloscopes, receivers, and tape recorders. After the death of John Ellis in 1968, Leonard Dale of Dale Electric GB Ltd acquired the company and developed DC secure power systems for the North Sea Oilfields market.

In the early 1970s, Erskine battery chargers became essential for maintaining generator start batteries, providing backup during mains failures to support lighting, electronic telephone exchanges, and computer systems. A purpose-built factory was built in 1975 in Eastfield, Scarborough, following the growing demand for its battery chargers.

Brian Cockerill, a Mechanical Design Engineer at Dale who joined the company in 1974, reflected on the relocation to the Eastfield site:

I started my career at the Erskine Newby site, and early on, I was part of the team responsible for moving to the new Eastfield site. I recall moving everything ourselves with the help of Fisher Transport, which was then a part of Dale Electric, over a week and into the weekend.

Throughout its history, Erskine focused on technological advancements, integrating the latest electronics and battery technology into its products. Its commitment to innovation helped the company stay competitive and meet the evolving needs of its customers. It supplied and serviced industries, including power generation, petrochemicals, process control, telecommunications, data centres, commercial centres, and railways, where its products and services ensured continuous operations for many businesses.

From Erskine to Dale Power Solutions

Over the years, Erskine underwent various changes, culminating in its merger with Dale, marking the end of its operations under the Erskine name. Since then, the legacy and expertise of Erskine have been integrated into Dale, continuing to serve critical power solutions in the industrial sector under the Dale Power Solutions brand.

The Erskine products, technical expertise, and services were incorporated into the Dale portfolio, enabling the company to establish itself as one of the market leaders in power solutions for uninterrupted power supply.

Today, Dale is very proud to be recognised for its strong portfolio of UPS, Backup Generators, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and Fuel Management and Polishing Solutions, along with its unparalleled Service and Maintenance operations, which comprise:

The Future of Erskine and Dale Power Solutions

The relaunch of Erskine will bring back to life a well-recognised brand that has a worldwide reach in its sector - it will further support the expansion of the Dale operations globally.

During the drive to expand UPS international markets, Dale recognises the strength of the Erskine name, where, still to this day, the brand remains synonymous with high-quality UPS systems and exceptional service. This enduring reputation, particularly across the Middle East, will enable Dale to expand its presence in these markets.

Such is the brand recognition of Erskine that it was an easy decision to refresh and relaunch the brand. With a subtle tweak to bring the brand into line with Dale, the new logo will start to have its presence felt as it will feature prominently on Industrial UPS products and across the Dale website.
